Here at Mallory Motorcycles, we spend a lot of time talking about the visceral thrill of riding—the twist of the throttle, the lean of the corners, and the open road. But we also know that staying safe is the only way to ensure you can keep enjoying that thrill for years to come.
While we don’t sell this particular piece of kit in our shop, we constantly keep our ears to the ground for the latest and greatest in motorcycle technology. Recently, a new gadget has been making serious waves in the biker community: the Chigee SR-1 Millimeter-Wave Radar System.
If you’ve ever wished you had eyes in the back of your helmet, this might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for. Let’s break down what the Chigee SR-1 is, how it works, and why it’s setting a new standard for motorcycle safety.
In simple terms, the Chigee SR-1 is an automotive-grade 77GHz millimeter-wave radar specifically engineered for motorcycles.
For years, high-end luxury cars have utilized Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to monitor blind spots and prevent rear-end collisions. Chigee has managed to shrink that technology into a discrete, IP68/IP69 weather-sealed unit (about 42mm in size) that mounts to the rear of your motorcycle.
Unlike standard 24GHz radars, the 77GHz frequency offers millimeter-level accuracy. With a massive 70-meter detection range, it continuously scans the environment behind you—cutting through heavy rain, thick fog, dust, and total darkness to monitor approaching traffic.
The SR-1 doesn’t just beep at everything that moves. It uses intelligent algorithms to calculate the speed and distance of surrounding vehicles, adapting its alerts based on how fast you are riding. It features four distinct active warning modes:
One of our favorite features of the SR-1 is that it doesn’t just communicate with the rider; it communicates with the threat.
The radar module includes an integrated, high-brightness active rear warning light. When the system detects a high-speed approach from a tailgating or distracted driver, this outward-facing strobe flashes rapidly to grab their attention, prompting them to hit the brakes before a collision occurs.
You don’t need a massive dashboard to run this system. The Chigee SR-1 works perfectly as a standalone unit. You can wire it up, attach the included warning indicator lights to your existing mirrors (or upgrade to Chigee’s specialized Radar Rearview Mirrors), and you are good to go.
However, if you are a tech-junkie who already uses one of Chigee’s popular smart displays—like the AIO-5 or the new AIO-6—the SR-1 pairs seamlessly with them. It pushes real-time radar graphics directly to your screen, giving you a visual map of the traffic behind you alongside your Apple CarPlay or Android Auto navigation.
That being said, we are incredibly impressed by what Chigee has done here. At a retail price of around £199.95, bringing automotive-grade blind-spot monitoring to the everyday rider is a massive win for the motorcycling community. The fact that it works flawlessly in heavy rain and dynamically adjusts its warnings based on your speed shows that it was designed by riders, for riders.
Whether you’re a daily commuter battling rush-hour traffic on the M1, or a weekend tourer navigating unfamiliar roads, having a “sixth sense” watching your back is an upgrade worth considering.
