Waze is no longer just a helpful sat nav app; it is rapidly evolving into an intelligent driving partner. With the latest integration of Google’s Gemini AI, Waze has rolled out a suite of highly anticipated features, headlined by a dedicated Motorcycle Mode.
Motorbikes and scooters require entirely different routing strategies compared to cars. They can seamlessly navigate narrower streets, utilise two-wheeler shortcuts, and face unique vulnerabilities when it comes to road surfaces. Recognising this, Waze’s new Motorcycle Mode leverages AI to calculate the most efficient and safest routes specifically for riders.
Crucially, this mode provides an accurate estimated time of arrival (ETA) while highlighting hazards that are particularly tricky for motorcyclists. Alerts include:
Powered by real-time traffic data and a dedicated community of motorbike map editors, Motorcycle Mode is currently rolling out on iOS and Android in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines, with a wider rollout to more countries on the way.
Every driver has their own preferences. Whilst Waze has always excelled at understanding a city’s hyperlocal traffic patterns, the app will now suggest routes based on your historical driving habits. For instance, if you naturally prefer taking the motorway over local streets with multiple stops, Waze will actively suggest those routes first.
If you prefer standard routing, Waze keeps it flexible. It remains incredibly easy to choose alternate routes or turn off personalisation altogether in your settings. This feature is rolling out globally across all Android and iOS devices.
We all know the frustration of a sat nav interrupting the best part of a song or a gripping podcast. To solve this, Waze has introduced a ‘Less Chatty’ mode.
When enabled, Waze significantly minimises the frequency of voice prompts and keeps them incredibly brief. You will still receive critical safety reminders—such as major hazards, upcoming turns, and necessary lane changes—but the reduced chatter ensures you can concentrate on your audio and the road ahead. This feature is currently rolling out globally.
Reporting hazards is the lifeblood of the Waze community, but tapping a screen whilst driving isn’t always practical. Waze is expanding its Gemini-powered Conversational Reporting capabilities, allowing users to report map updates and incidents using natural language.
Instead of navigating menus, you can simply say phrases like, “The road is closed here”. Waze’s AI understands the context and immediately sends the details to local map editors. Once verified, the map is updated for everyone. This hands-free, conversational approach keeps the map accurate while keeping the driver’s hands firmly on the steering wheel.
Sometimes you know what you are looking for, but you don’t know the exact address. Waze is testing a new Gemini-powered voice search that allows you to ask complex questions to find your destination.
By tapping the voice search icon, users can ask highly specific questions, such as:
Waze will seamlessly generate a list of suitable options, allowing you to select one and begin navigating purely by voice. This intelligent destination search is currently rolling out globally to the Waze beta community on both Android and iOS.
